On Saturday he came back with tulips
That he knew would remind her that he remembered
the little details about her,
the little details about her,
& asked her to retitle their relationship,
Again. I told her congratulations with a smile
That I save for grandma's handmade sweaters every year for Christmas
That I save for grandma's handmade sweaters every year for Christmas
As I ached to remind her that Ben and Jerry’s Rocky Road
Never undid the goodbyes delivered by text message instead
by mouth.
by mouth.
Wow, Kay! You’ve come so far since your first draft of this imitation. I think the enjambment of “& asked her to retitle their relationship, / again” is so well done and reminds me of the ones in “My Father’s Love Letters.” The smile bit is so great and really gives a nice insight to the narrator and their thoughts on the relationship between her friend and this guy. Plus, it made me smile. The last part is also very telling of the toxic relationship that the narrator is watching, especially because it is “goodbyes” showing that this is not the first, or probably the last, time it will happen. Overall this is a really great piece!
