I read Katie Chaples’ “ Life is
not a Porno.” Let’s face it, the title grabbed me and I needed to continue
reading to see what this poem talked about. I thought it was an interesting
technique for her to use the title as her first line and the first line in the
stanza as the continuation of that particular thought. She breaks “Because
nothing would get done” from “Ever.” I liked this because it really emphasizes
the EVER. She goes on to talk about how all the jobs just turn into “jobs and
breasts, hair and moans.” This is a much more specific way of saying that the
job doesn’t matter because they all just turn into sex objects. My favorite
line of the whole poem is, “Cocks like the promise of road West.” I just love
this line! It’s something that would never have come together normally. It’s
odd and so powerful because the West promised so many things and it just didn’t
turn out as awesome as everyone thought it would be. Instead of saying there
are no expectations in life, she says that no one says, “make the bed” or “you
never touch me anymore.” Fantasy. She’s saying that life isn’t this fantasy,
but instead she says it’s not a Porno. She does a great job.
