My reading response is going to be on Chapter Two of the Writing
Poetry book since we never had that quiz over it. I like how the book talks
about having the form dawn on you instead
of directing you. This makes a lot
of sense to me because in high school my English teachers would want us to
write a certain kind of poem. I had the hardest time trying to put my writing
into the form they wanted me to put it in. I always wanted to just say what I
wanted to say then put the form in later like the book says. Also, now that I’ve
seen the Q & A session really end up in writing we can use for our journal,
I want to go out and do this more often on days when I’m having writing issues.
The expansion-contraction process is one that I’ve had the
most trouble with of the years of my writing. When I write a line that I think
is really good, I have a harder time cutting it even though I know it doesn’t
fit in with the rest of my piece the way it should. I’ve gotten better at it over
time and I hope to embrace it more like the book talks about. I also like the
idea of guided imagery and how we build a piece based on one image. It might
help me with building form and practicing expansion-contradiction.
Lastly, I really like the writing examples in the book. These
students are very talented.
